So I’m 16, just moved onto a lake with family, and got a boat for Christmas. Do I have to take Boaters Safety to operate it on the lake? Even if I don’t need it for the boat, would it be smart to invest in the classes, just to be safe, especially if I go to a friends house who may have a Jet Ski (PWC) And how difficult are the classes?
Don’t go on your boat or your friends PWC without having a boating course first.
The classes are not hard, just good info for boating and common sense. Wear your PFD all the time. Always tell someone on shore where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

Those 16 years of age or older may operate any boat on the waters of Michigan, except a PWC.
Those 14 years of age or older:
1. And born after December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally only if they have obtained a boating safety certificate.
2. And born on or before December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally without restrictions.
I would suggest to take a boaters safety course, the more you know the safer you will be and he more you will enjoy boating.
